Insurance firm takes South Sudan VP to court

An insurance firm operating in the Sudans has sued South Sudan Vice-President Riek Machar for using his authority to control the activities of the company.

Sheikhan Insurance and Reinsurance Company Limited wants Dr Machar to refrain from interfering with its activities as he held no stake in the investment.

The firm said the Vice-President had dismissed some of the the staff and imposed a new manager.

The company’s Legal Advisor, Mr Yoannes Yor Akol, said Tuesday that it had closed its offices in protest against the Vice-President.

“Since the end of September, we filed a law suit against the Vice-President and we have now suspended our duties because of his illegal interference,” Mr Yoannes said.

“It is a private company that does not need the powers of the Vice-President,” he said.

The company claimed that Dr Machar appointed Daniel Bangot Kier a s General Manager, using his authority.
