Telar Deng: Education is the key to solving leadership deficit in South Sudan

Thursday, May 10, 2018 (PW) — We all know why education is good for individuals like me and you. In a competitive world, you stand a better chance of earning more, leading a better life and you can also take good care of your health and your family.

You are prone to make better decisions that will affect you and your family positively. What we never really talk about as much is education in leadership and politics.

I am of the opinion that education must be compulsory when it comes to leadership and politics. It is fundamental for at least a leader to be educated, because this makes it easier for him/her to be able to manage the country and make informed decisions.

It’s been proven that leaders who have an education, have a vision while leaders without an education do not have a vision whatsoever. In this article, I will highlight on educated leaders and their strengths and also on uneducated leaders and their ignorance.

Is SPLM unity today another looming war awaiting South Sudan?

Thursday, May 10, 2018 (PW) — The division in SPLM is not something new to the people of south Sudan. SPLM had divisions before including that of December 2013. All these division or disagreement in the party always led to the military confrontation as seen in 1991 and in 2013. The division in SPLM has become a threat to our country existence and cost the people of Southern Sudan then and south Sudan much.

In other countries the division in the party is not a business of the outsider and the country as a whole, it is usually a business of the party but in the case of South Sudan the situation is different. It’s different in sense that any disagreement in SPLM become a national concern which should not be the case.

The SPLM refusal to delink itself from the army and make a different between the nation and itself is a matter of concern. The situation become more complicated through indifferential between SPLM as party and they nation. SPLM sees itself as nation and a nation as SPLM.

President Kiir missed the road to the promise land, he must resign

Thursday, May 10, 2018 (PW) — Conflict erupted in Juba in the year 2013 and the root cause is counted on the past failure of the current South Sudan president Salva Kiir. In 2004 when the Sudan People Liberation Movement [SPLM] was heading to sign CPA, Kiir’s advisors and hardliners cautioned him to rebel against Garang because of his pursuit of power.

Since 2005 the end of self-determination [2011] has been marked by ethnic war, corruption, nepotism and tribalism. Therefore, the shame of the past is hunting down the leadership of “unfit” leaders, as Nikki said. Military competition is an important for Salva Kiir’s leadership rather than democracy. This observation has implications in the negation led by IGAD.

Thursday, May 10, 2018 (PW) — For a better South Sudan, the US Government should not act like an Opposition to South Sudan Government.

Well, I have read the statement of the US Press Secretary on the Civil War in South Sudan with great interest, and also with pity. It is clear for some of us who are on the ground here in South Sudan that the US Press Secretary on the Civil War in South Sudan wrote the statement, basing facts, on the findings of the NGOs and the opposition, and so, much as it is honest attempt to express the US frustration, it is short of facts, because it is a one-sided story.

To begin with, and bluntly so, South Sudanese no longer buy the idea that the US did this or that for South Sudan…this song has become monotonous. The US has often bragged about helping the birth of South Sudan, and offering millions of US Dollars to this effort; although we cannot say to whom those millions of US Dollars have been given. The US and her allies should give us an accountability – to whom this money was given, and what was done with it. In South Sudan, we say “Do not Praise Yourself for the Good Thing you did for Other; let Other do the Praise!”

South Sudan: Why Ebola outbreak in DRC is something to worry about

Thursday, May 10, 2018 (PW) — Ebola has resurfaced and is back on the news making headlines again. The mention of the name Ebola alone reminds me of the grim and horrifying memories of the utter devastation and destruction it left on its trail in West Africa in 2014.

Ebola haemorrhagic fever or simply Ebola, is a viral infection which is highly contagious and very deadly. It’s symptoms are fever, sore throat, muscle pain and headaches.

The country it has struck this time is our neighbor, DRC, for a record ninth time, which must be a cause of concern to us given the likelihood of it being carried through the border into our country.

Several suspected cases have been reported already with as many as 21 deaths especially in the Northwestern part of DRC as per CNN reporting.
